The UCs evaluate applications in context, meaning that you are compared to your peers (those who attend the same high school as you). You will need to be flexible in stressing the characteristics that will make you stand out to the campuses you are especially interested in while making sure you still appeal to the rest of the UCs as well. This is tricky because you only fill out one online application for the UCs to apply to all of the campuses. If you are particularly interested in certain UC campuses, make sure you find out what those campuses look for in their applicants. Each campus searches for a different set of students and that is why you often hear about “weird” results (getting rejected from Davis but accepted at Berkeley or getting into Berkeley and UCLA but rejected at San Diego). While all of the campuses use the same set of admission criteria ( Comprehensive Review), each campus determines how each criterion weighs in the admission process. There is also a San Francisco campus but only graduate-level degrees are offered there. The University of California system has 9 undergraduate campuses: Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz. If a waitlist statement is allowed, you may use that as an appeal if needed. Keep in mind that, if you decline the waitlist, then you effectively said no to the campus, and that disqualifies you from appealing as well. UCs do not allow applicants who were offered waitlist option to appeal. For example, what experiences, knowledge, skills, and characteristics do you bring to the campus and how will you positively contribute to the student body and/or the campus community?įor campuses that do NOT have a waitlist statement, keep in mind that they will NOT review unsolicited information. For example, what opportunities will the campus offer you and how do you intend to take advantage of those opportunities? You should also reinforce why you are the right student for that campus. If a waitlist statement is allowed, be sure to explain why the campus is right for you. There is no penalty for you to withdraw the SIR if you are accepted from the waitlist somewhere else (except losing the $250 deposit). Most UC campuses will not release waitlist decisions until well after the May 1 SIR deadline, so be sure to follow through with a backup plan in case the waitlist decision doesn’t work out in your favor. I recommend that you carefully review the waitlist information and/or FAQ from the campus that offered you waitlist before opting in.
Most UCs will have an opt-in deadline of April 15, but some campuses may have different deadlines.
Each UC campus handles the waitlist opt-in process a little differently.
